Here by the walls of Jerusalem I say farewell to a great Jewish patriot, a great human being, a great friend of the state of Israel and the Jewish people and a great friend of mine.
Eric Samson has been honoured and applauded for a lifetime of achievement. Yet I would argue, some of his greatest achievements still lie in the future. His legacy will be felt for years and decades to come.
Very few people change the world, Eric Samson was one of them. He changed lives, he changed industries, he changed entire countries.
Eric will be remembered as one of the great philanthropists of the Jewish people of our time.
Eric Samson's approach to philanthropy was so generous that he seemed to act more as a custodian of wealth than as an owner of it, recognizing the blessings he had received by using the fruits of those blessings to make the world a better place.
I don't recall any other philanthropist in the world who managed to touch the life of so many unique projects.
It is unimaginable how one person can bring about such a sea change in the lives of so many.
Eric believed in the power of creating opportunities for those seeking better ways to help others.
Eric Samson was a communal leader and philanthropist. His generosity was renowned, inspirational and unsurpassed. He championed kindness as a pillar of meaningful living.
Eric had an impact on countless causes and communities around the world as well as profoundly changing the lives and destinies of untold individuals. He taught us that every ‘mitzvah’ (good deed) we do brings out the beauty in the world and every ‘mitzvah’ shared helps that beauty blossom.
Eric z”l was a man of true benevolence – the likes of which we all aspire to emulate. He embodied every facet of what it means to be a real ‘mensch’ (gentleman). Unspoiled by his success and unimpressed by his own sterling reputation, Eric always preferred humility and simplicity rather than honour and recognition.
Eric z”l taught the world about the power of tzedakah – charity. He taught us how giving can change lives, uplift society, strengthen the world, heal the sick, support the poor, educate children, respect our elders and build communities.
He gave with generosity but also with vision. He showed us how you can literally change the world through the power of giving. Eric left a remarkable legacy: he treated everyone with kindness, he took care of those in need, he loved Israel and the Jewish People.
He was deeply committed to his Jewish heritage and his love for the land of Israel. His noble generosity was all encompassing, from kindergartens to old aged homes, from Jewish Community Centers to the Chevrah Kadisha, from hospitals to education of the underprivileged – no aspect of Jewish or communal life was left untouched. The greatness of Eric’s achievements was surpassed only by the magnitude of his generous heart.
Perhaps the best way to encapsulate the essence of Eric Samson z”l, whose belief in giving was embedded in his very DNA, can be found in his famous quote: “The more you give, the more you get!”
